Vancouver Heights: Breanna Bannan

Vancouver Heights -- Breanna Bannan, a senior at Columbia River High School, won a $150 first-place prize in an essay contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7824.

Bannan wrote an essay for the Voice of Democracy contest with the theme “Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military?” Bannan went on to win first place in the district competition Jan. 8, giving her the chance to compete at the state competition on Jan. 22 against 15 other contestants.

Although Bannan didn’t win at the state level, she said she will continue to volunteer as a Salvation Army bell ringer during the winter and at the Vancouver VA hospital. “I want to make a difference in this country and, ultimately, in the world,” Bannan said.
