PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland has agreed to pay $1.2 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a distraught man fatally shot in the back by police in January 2010.

The federal civil rights lawsuit over the death of Aaron Campbell had been set to go to trial next week.

The Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/QzQran ) that Mayor Sam Adams apologized to Campbell’s family on his Facebook page. Adams added that he realizes the settlement does not erase the family’s pain.

The City Council must still approve the settlement reached late Tuesday.

Campbell was unarmed and emotionally distraught over his brother’s death when he emerged from an apartment at police direction with his back to officers and his hands behind his head. The officer who shot him was fired.
