Rhode Island defeats UMass 81-78 in overtime

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) — Orion Outerbridge scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Rhode Island defeated Massachusetts 81-78 in overtime on Wednesday night to end a three-game losing streak in the series.

The Rams made 8 of 10 free throw attempts in the extra period, including two by Nikola Malesevic with 4 seconds remaining for the final margin. Malesevic and Outerbridge hit jumpers to start the overtime, then the Rams relied on foul shots the rest of the way.

Outerbridge, who scored 18 points in the first half, hit a basket with 29 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime tied 69-69.

Malesevic added 19 points and Dominique McKoy had 10 for the Rams (5-18, 2-6 Atlantic 10 Conference), who have won two straight on the heels of a six-game losing streak.

Raphial Putney scored 18 points and Sean Carter added 16 for UMass (16-6, 5-3).
