For the second year in a row, Evergreen’s Shahala Middle School won the largest regional science bowl in the country.

Team members Jason Yu, Sydney Wallace, Austin Jang, Ming Liu and Kobi Hsu on Saturday bested 67 other teams from across the Northwest during the daylong Bonneville Power Administration Regional Science Bowl at the University of Portland.

The win secured the students a spot at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. Last year, Shahala placed second at the national level.

Since BPA began sponsoring the science bowl 21 years ago, the competition has grown to become the nation’s largest regional science bowl. Each winter, more than 500 middle and high school students from around the Northwest visit Portland for the quiz-show-style competition.

The high school science bowl will be 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Feb. 4 at Franz Hall and Buckley Auditorium on the campus of the University of Portland on North Willamette Boulevard in Portland.
