Davies leads BYU to 79-60 victory over Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Brandon Davies had 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead BYU to a 79-60 victory over Portland on Saturday night.

Noah Hartsock was 12 of 12 from the free-throw line to finish with 12 points for the Cougars (20-6, 8-3), who trailed briefly in the second half before pulling away. BYU made 38 of a school-record 53 free-throw attempts, while Portland made 10 of 23.

Kevin Bailey had 15 points for the Pilots (6-18, 3-8).

Craig Cusick made three straight 3-pointers to put BYU up 21-14 midway through the first half. The Pilots closed to 29-27 on David Carr’s 3-pointer, but the Cougars led 32-27 at the break.

Portland opened the second half with an 8-0 run, capped by Bailey’s free throw, for a 39-35 lead, but it was short-lived.

The Cougars were coming off an 83-73 victory at home over No. 24 Gonzaga on Thursday.
