Judge Poyfair to retire sooner than originally planned

Clark County Superior Court Judge Edwin Poyfair has moved up the date he plans to retire from the bench.

Poyfair had announced he planned to exit office at the end of this year, when his term expires. Tuesday, he said he changed his resignation to be effective April 30.

The judge’s early departure means the governor must appoint a replacement instead of holding an election to decide the successor. The governor’s appointed replacement will have to run for election later this year to keep the post.

Poyfair, 68, has been a Superior Court judge for nearly 20 years, spending the last nine years presiding over predominantly family law cases. He says he will spend his retirement in Arizona.
