Letter: Smug Democrats heading off track

Someone once described Shakespeare’s version of Richard III as “a bottled spider.” That’s been my idea of a Republican. But now I’m beginning to have second thoughts. All because of this CRC dust-up starring Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, and Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore. I’m wondering if those wonderful Democrats of mine haven’t gone off track.

Democrats mean well. But lately I’ve gotten a little nauseated watching these big city mayors and small town commissioners cook up their “Mommy-knows-best” stew of utopian dreams. Bike riders? Sure, give ’em a lower deck. Pedestrians? Sure, give ’em an extra lane. Light rail? Sure, and if people don’t want it, we shove it down their throats.

DeFazio says “without light rail, the whole project goes back to the drawing board; that’s 10 years.” But somehow it’s OK that with light rail, it’s taken 10 years and $140 million in paper shuffling.

This “Mommy-knows-best” idea seems implanted in Democrats’ collective DNA. I can see these self-important savants sitting around their polished conference table designing this bridge as they once designed sand castles at the beach. In the words of Mark Twain, as smug as a Christian holding four aces.

Now, please, somebody organize a vote on this CRC boondoggle before I turn into a Republican.
