SHELTON, Wash. (AP) — A Mason County sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a man who was driving his truck toward the officer.

It happened about 8:30 p.m. Thursday near Lake Cushman where a deputy conducting surveillance watched the suspect stealing wood and called for backup.

Chief Deputy B. Dean Byrd tells KBKW the suspect fled for a short distance and stopped. As a deputy was approaching the suspect, he sped toward the deputy who feared for his life and fired his rifle. The suspect drove over an embankment and had to be rescued by deputies and firefighters.

The 50-year-old Hoodsport man was taken to Mason General Hospital in Shelton in serious condition.
