Norovirus is to blame for hundreds of illnesses during and after a cheer and dance event in Everett this month.

Testing at the Public Health Laboratories confirmed Friday that norovirus sickened at least 229 participants and adults.

Norovirus is a highly contagious illness caused by infection with a virus called norovirus. It’s often called by other names, such as viral gastroenteritis, stomach flu, and food poisoning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Norovirus is typically transmitted person-to-person.

More than 200 people reported vomiting and diarrhea during or after the Feb. 4 event and at least 33 have sought medical care. Those numbers are expected to grow as state health officials receives answers from surveys sent to event participants and families, according to the state health department.

Students and adults from Columbia River and Skyview high schools in Clark County attended the event. At last three students and four adults from Columbia River reported feeling sick after the event, but the extent of their illness is not known.
