Update at 5:57 p.m. Friday:

An inmate at the Clark County Jail died Friday morning, according to a sheriff’s news release.

Marius Asanachescu, 29, was being held for suspected second-degree assault/domestic violence. He was booked into the jail Jan. 30.

The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, the sheriff’s office said.

Asanachescu was spotted in medical distress, according to the news release, and resuscitation efforts began. Paramedics from both the Vancouver Fire Deparment and American Medical Response were called at 8:50 a.m., but the man was pronounced dead at 9:14 a.m.

It was unclear what transpired. The original 911 call indicated a person at the jail was not breathing.

As is standard procedure with a death in the jail, the sheriff’s major crimes unit will investigate. The sheriff’s news release did not indicate whether the death is suspected to be criminal in nature, a suicide, or due to natural causes.

The jail is at 707 W. 13th St., next to the Clark County Courthouse. Inside the courthouse, proceedings in at least one case were temporarily delayed by the jail incident.
