EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A Creswell, Ore., couple charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of their 16-year-old son have pleaded not guilty.

The Lane County sheriff’s office contends Austin Sprout died Dec. 20 of an unspecified condition that doctors say could have been treated.

Sheriff’s officers say the boy’s mother and stepfather, Brandi and Russell Bellew, relied instead on faith healing. They were arrested last Friday.

About 30 supporters packed a Lane County Jail courtroom Monday.

Obituary information provided by the family indicates the parents are affiliated with the General Assembly and Church of the First Born.

Their next court appearance is set for March 19.
