DECEPTION PASS, Wash. (AP) — A driver fleeing from a Washington State Patrol trooper was killed in a crash Sunday on Highway 20 near Deception Pass.

The patrol says 53-year-old Donald R. Johnson of Anacortes was ejected from his car and landed in the roadway where he was run over by the trooper who was unable to stop.

The chase began when Johnson was spotted driving recklessly.

KOMO reports the trooper had broken off the pursuit because of high speeds but came upon the accident as he rounded a curve less than a mile south of the Deception Pass bridge.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The patrol says alcohol was a factor in the crash and Johnson was not wearing a seat belt.
