High-tech battery materials plant opens in Albany

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) -- A plant to produce carbon material that would increase the storage capacity of electric car batteries has opened in Albany.

The Seattle company EnerG2 got a $21 million federal stimulus grant two years ago to help remodel a warehouse of one of its partners, Oregon Freeze Dry.

CEO Rick Luebbe (LOO-bee) told the Albany Democrat-Herald (http://bit.ly/xCbbAm ) the plant's initial output will be 20 metric tons a month of the pure carbon material in a fine powder.

He says the product could have applications in batteries other than those in vehicles.

The plant is expected to employ more than 30 people.
