Senate approves tolls at Columbia River Crossing

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- Washington lawmakers are moving ahead with a plan allowing tolls to rebuild the Interstate 5 bridge connecting Portland and Vancouver.
The state Senate voted 33-15 on Tuesday to approve the measure. Supporters say the bill say the project will aid the economy both through the construction and having an improved corridor when the work is complete.
The Washington law is a beginning step for a project that is expected to cost roughly $3 billion. Bond sales backed by toll revenues are expected to cover about one-third of the costs while the remainder is expected to come from a combination of state money from both states and federal funds.
