Small plane crashes at Mount Si near North Bend

NORTH BEND, Wash. (AP) -- With daylight Wednesday, a King County sheriff's search and rescue team is trying to reach the scene of a small airplane crash near North Bend.

Capt. Kent Baxter told reporters the sheriff's helicopter found the wreckage, and the crash does not appear to be survivable.

Sgt. Cindi West says the plane crashed before 3 a.m. on the sheer face of the Little Si section of Mount Si.

West says residents reported hearing a plane sputtering and an explosion. She says two deputies who were on a call in the area also heard the impact.

Mount Si is a 4,200-foot peak, popular with climbers and hikers, about 30 miles east of Seattle.
