Whitman College study recommends Voting Rights Act
Thursday, February 16, 2012
YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) -- Students at Whitman College who conducted a study of Latinos in Eastern Washington say more needs to be done to ensure the population is adequately represented in government.
Since 2005, the annual study has been part of a seminar in politics offered for juniors and seniors.
The report released Thursday recommended that the state Legislature pass a Washington Voting Rights Act to facilitate minority representation in local communities.
A House bill that would have made it easier for minorities to get elected to local government posts passed out of committee this session but didn't come up for a floor vote.
