NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Knicks have signed J.R. Smith, who is returning to the NBA after playing in China.
The Knicks announced the deal Friday night before their game against the New Orleans Hornets. Smith had declared his intentions earlier in the day on Twitter, saying "New York Knicks it is!"
Smith is a streaky shooter with deep range and has averaged 12.5 points in the NBA since he was the No. 18 pick by the Hornets in the 2004 draft. He spent the last five seasons with the Nuggets, twice scoring more than 15 points per game.
The Knicks think he will help with their 3-point shooting.
To make room on the roster, the Knicks waived forward Renaldo Balkman.
