Don Brunell’s Feb. 14 column, “To keep Social Security alive, we must look at benefits,” was not, in my opinion, very informative.
First of all, there are many seniors whose only income is from Social Security and many of them are lucky to receive $600 a month. In today’s market, it is difficult for them to find rent, pay $100 for Medicare, food, etc.
Reducing benefits for them would be disastrous.
Second, when drawing Social Security and working until, I believe, 70, Social Security takes $1 for every $3 contributed. That could be changed to $1 for $1 for those earning over $50,000. Same for those over 70, at which age they can earn as much as they want.In addition, there was no indication by Brunell about how long the $3 trillion he says the government owes the fund would support Social Security. We, the people, didn’t take the money out so let’s take as much as possible out of our Congress’ retirement funds to help put back the $3 trillion and reduce their retirement benefits also.
We could also reduce their congressional paid staff by 50 percent to help reduce our budget.
