Emergency dispatchers received word about 6:55 p.m. Monday that a man was driving northbound on southbound Interstate 5 between the Main Street exit and 78th Street.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Richard Bettger said a Clark County sheriff’s deputy headed south heard from a dispatcher and was able to turn on his flashers and warn the man to drive onto the freeway shoulder.

“He (the wrong-way driver) made it as far as the 63rd Street overpass and a Clark County deputy was able to put on emergency lights on get him to stop,” Bettger said.

He said the man is 88 and was cited for driving the wrong way on a freeway.

Bettger said family members were called to get the car turned around and drive it home for the man.

Alcohol was not involved, Bettger said.
