Community notebook: Vancouver team wins Oregon hockey title

Vancouver won the Oregon High School Hockey League championship on Feb. 14, defeating Metro 8-4 at Mountain View Ice Arena.

Forrest Schiffman scored three goals for Vancouver, which completed an unbeaten season by scoring four goals in both the second and the third period. Logan Anderson had two goals and one assist, Dalton Carter scored two goals and Corey Bishop had a goal and an assist.

Vancouver goalie Taylor Baines had 17 saves in the win. After a scoreless first period, Vancouver took a 4-1 lead in the second period.

This week, both Vancouver and Metro will play in a four-team tournament with the top two teams from the Southern Oregon High School Hockey League. Games will be played on Saturday and Sunday at the Winterhawks Skating Center in Beaverton.

Also providing assists for Vancouver in the Oregon High School Hockey League championship game were Jon Anderson (two), Jake Morgan (two), Logan Chavez, Jacob Bishop and Gage Drews-Newman.

The Metro team includes players from Metro League schools in Portland’s westside suburbs. Jake Vissers had three goals and one assist for Metro, and Cody Larkin scored one goal.

KWRL Babe Ruth tryout on Saturday

KWRL Babe Ruth, which serves the Ridgefield, La Center, Woodland, Yacolt and Amboy school districts, has a tryout and final registration scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The 3-year-old league offers baseball for players ages 13-15.

Fort Vancouver Run is March 4

Advance registration continues for the March 4 Fort Vancouver Run.

The fourth-annual event offers several courses for runners to choose from. There are 15-kilometer and 6-kilometer runs, and a 10-kilometer course for runners and walkers.

The races start between 8:15 and 8:45 a.m. at the Fred Meyer Grand Central Shopping Center.

Cost is $40 ($45 for the 15-K). Online registration is available through Feb. 29 at www.energyevents.com.
