EL PASO, Texas (AP) -- C.J. Cooper scored six of his 16 points in the second overtime to lead UTEP to a 76-68 victory against Southern Mississippi on Wednesday night.
Cooper's jumper with 45 seconds remaining gave the Miners (14-13, 7-6 Conference USA) a 71-68 lead, and after Darnell Dodson missed two free throws at the other end, Southern Miss (22-6, 9-4) was forced to foul. UTEP made five free throws in the last 34 seconds.
Julian Washburn and John Bohannon added 14 points each for the Miners.
Dodson had 16 points, and Jonathan Mills added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles, who lost their second straight and dropped out of a tie for the C-USA lead with Memphis' victory against East Carolina on Wednesday.
Cooper's jumper with 10 seconds remaining in regulation tied the score at 56-all. Neil Watson of Southern Miss could not hit from close range with a second left, resulting in an extra period.
Gabriel McCulley had 12 points and Jacques Streeter 10 for the Miners, who shot 50 percent (26 of 52) from the floor.
