ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — A Douglas County couple who killed a neighbor’s dog with antifreeze were sentenced Thursday in Roseburg to six months in jail.

Bernard and Mitzi Daugherty were found guilty last week of animal abuse and criminal mischief.

Bernard Daugherty testified he intended to kill dogs defecating in his yard. He told the judge at sentencing he’s sorry the dog died.

KPIC reports (http://is.gd/Nwiule ) the Daughertys are to report to jail on Monday, but the sheriff has the option of placing them under house arrest.

They also have to pay $600 in veterinary bills to the dog’s owner.
