BURIEN, Wash. (AP) — The King County sheriff has been offered a job as executive director of the Washington state Criminal Justice Training Commission.

Commission spokesman Greg Baxter tells The Seattle Times that the job offer made Thursday is contingent on a background check. He says Rahr has not yet accepted it.

Rahr declined comment.

King County Elections spokeswoman Kim van Ekstrom says if Rahr takes the new post, the King County Council will appoint someone to fill the sheriff’s position on an interim basis until Rahr’s four-year term ends in 2013.

Rahr has said she’d like to see her chief deputy succeed her. That’s Steve Strachan, the former chief of the suburban Kent police department.

The Criminal Justice Training Commission oversees the state’s police training center in the south Seattle suburb of Burien, where all police officers except state troopers undergo basic training. The commission also sets statewide training standards for peace officers.
