Gruber wins Nordic combined event

LIBEREC, Czech Republic (AP) — Bernhard Gruber of Austria followed up his second place in the ski jumping section with a strong cross-country race to win a World Cup Nordic combined event on Saturday.

After his 100-meter jump, Gruber pulled away from Wilhelm Denifl of Germany who won the jumping section. He cruised to his third career World Cup victory, covering the 10-kilometer distance in 27 minutes, 29.6 seconds.

Eric Frenzel of Germany was 22.0 seconds behind in second place and Denifl finished 25.2 seconds back in third.

Jason Lamy Chappuis of France still comfortably leads the overall World Cup standings with 1,173 points despite his 21st-place finish. Akito Watabe of Japan is second with 970.

Another World Cup event in Liberec is scheduled for Sunday.
