SEATTLE (AP) -- A 22-year-old man who brutally beat an older man who tried to thwart the theft of his car has been sentenced to 33 years in prison.
Harold C. Donald Jr. of Kent was convicted of first-degree assault and attempted robbery in the December 2010 attack that left a 55-year-old man with severe head trauma and lingering health effects.
King County prosecutors said Donald was sentenced Friday.
Court records show Gordon McWhirter of the north Seattle suburb of Shoreline was outside smoking on his deck when he heard someone trying to steal his Jeep Cherokee. He went to investigate, wearing only slippers and a bathrobe.
After the attack, he was left naked and bloody in the street. Sheriff's detectives later learned Donald gave the victim's bloody bathrobe to his mother as a Christmas present.
A co-defendant pleaded guilty to attempted robbery but has not yet been sentenced.
