McCorkle, IPFW edge UMKC 76-73 for tourney berth

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Trey McCorkle scored 28 points, including the go-ahead basket with 22 seconds left, as IPFW edged UMKC 76-73 on Saturday night to gain the last spot in the Summit League tournament.

McCorkle went 13 of 14 from the floor and blocked three shots for the Mastodons (11-18, 5-13), who secured the eighth seed as they broke an eight-game losing streak. Frank Gaines scored 26 points, including 10 of 12 free throws, and Justin Jordan added 10.

The Kangaroos (10-21, 4-14) were eliminated from postseason contention despite 26 points from Reggie Chamberlain, 20 from Thomas Staton and 10 from Fred Chatmon.

IPFW will face champion Oral Roberts in the tournament quarterfinals Saturday night in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Nate Rogers hit two free throws to put UMKC ahead 73-72 with 34 seconds left before McCorkle’s key basket. Michael Gholston missed a 3-pointer, and Gaines added two free throws for the final margin.
