Nicholls State edges McNeese State 78-75

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — Sam McBeath and Jeremy Smith scored 16 points apiece, and Nicholls State went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the game’s waning seconds to beat McNeese State 78-75 on Saturday.

Both McBeath and Smith went 2-for-2 from the line for the Colonels in the game’s final 25 ticks, during which time the Cowboys combined to miss a 3, a jumper and two foul shots. Kevin Hardy knocked down a 3-pointer for McNeese State at the buzzer, but it was too late.

Trevon Lewis added 15 points for the Colonels (10-17, 6-8 Southland Conference), while Bryan Hammond had 11. It was the first meeting of the season between Nicholls State and McNeese State, which is in first place in the Southland’s East division.

Nicholls State outshot McNeese State 54.2 percent (26 of 48) to 40.7 percent (24 of 59).

Patrick Richard’s 28 points paced the Cowboys (15-12, 10-4).
