WELLPINIT, Wash. (AP) — Investigators say a disabled man is dead after a house fire in the community of Wellpinit, on the Spokane Indian Reservation in eastern Washington.

KREM-TV reports (http://bit.ly/x2Yk69) the fire started around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Fire investigators say two women made it out of the house safely and were being assisted by the Red Cross. They say the home had working fire alarms, which helped save the women’s lives.

Firefighters contained the flames to the back of one of the home’s bedrooms.

No names were released. However, Claude Cox, director of the tribe’s fire department, says the victim was a 49-year-old man with disabilities who couldn’t get out of the burning home.

Investigators are working to determine the fire’s cause.
