Letter: Do not give in on principle

The Columbian
Published: January 1, 2012, 4:00pm

A man said recently, “Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are always right on every political issue. Both sides must learn to compromise.”

I was reminded of a college classroom discussion where this solution was recommended. The wise professor said, “No, no, a compromise is the sacrifice of a principle, but a concession is the surrender of a preference.”

I learned that day that making concessions is much wiser than making compromises. We must hold to our principles.
