TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — An autopsy on the gunman who fatally shot a park ranger on Mount Rainier on New Year’s Day shows Benjamin Barnes died of drowning.

An autopsy completed Tuesday by Pierce County’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Thomas Clark, also found hypothermia was a significant condition in Barnes’ death. Investigators found him facedown in a snowy creek on Monday, wearing only a T-shirt, jeans and one tennis shoe.

An autopsy on Ranger Margaret Anderson found she died of gunshot wounds to the head and torso. That exam was done by Dr. Jacquelyn Morhaime, an associate county medical examiner.
