A La Center man who was injured after his minivan ended up on its side after a crash on Dec. 26 died in the hospital, officials said.

Norman W. Klam, 66, died at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, hospital spokesman Ken Cole said Tuesday.

According to Washington State Patrol, Klam was driving a 2006 Chrysler minivan eastbound on 219th Street near Interstate 5 around 5:44 p.m. when he crossed the centerline and struck a 1993 Honda Civic driven by Mary E. Wisniewski, 19, also of La Center. Klam’s minivan came to a rest on its side in the westbound lane, the state patrol said.

Wisniewski was not injured.

Firefighters extricated Klam using an ax to break the windshield and stabilization struts to ensure the car did not come down on anyone, said Battalion Chief Brett Graham of Clark County Fire & Rescue.
