STORRS, Conn. (AP) -- The University of Connecticut is launching a national search for its next athletic director and expects to make its choice within three months.
UConn President Susan Herbst says Paul Pendergast, who has been interim athletic director since September, did not want to be considered for the permanent post. He will be co-chairman of the eight-member search committee.
UConn has hired an Atlanta-based company to help with the search, and Pendergast will remain as interim director until the new person is appointed.
Pendergast took over from Jeff Hathaway, who retired under pressure after Herbst ordered an outside review of his handling of the department.
Herbst says the new athletic director will be expected to maintain and build upon the programs' success and student-athletes' academic performance, ensure compliance and help with fundraising.
