PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A doctor says a 14-year-old middle school student who collapsed in cardiac arrest at a school basketball practice in La Center, Wash., is in critical condition at a Portland, Ore., hospital.

Dr. Mark Banks said Wednesday that Cody Sherrell was showing signs of improvement and added doctors “are hopeful that he can recover from this.”

Banks, a specialist at Legacy Emanuel Hospital’s Randall Children’s Hospital, praised quick and effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation performed by bystanders at the La Center Middle School gym, and the later use of an external defibrillator.

Banks says the reason for the boy’s Tuesday collapse hasn’t been determined. He says Cody is being treated aggressively with medications. He’s also been placed in therapeutic hypothermia — his body cooled in hopes of preventing any further brain damage.
