Public memorial for ranger planned Tuesday

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) -- A Mount Rainier National Park spokeswoman says a public memorial service for a ranger fatally shot on New Year's Day has been scheduled for Tuesday.

Park spokesman Patti Wold says the memorial for Ranger Margaret Anderson will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 10 at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash.

On Wednesday, a special motorcade of emergency responders escorted Anderson's body from the Pierce County medical examiner's office to a mortuary.

While the park remains closed until Saturday, people have been leaving expressions of condolence at a makeshift memorial at the park entrance.

Anderson was shot while trying to stop a vehicle inside the park. The gunman was found dead Monday in the park.
