BOSTON (AP) — Reigning Boston Marathon champions Geoffrey Mutai and Caroline Kilel will return to defend their titles.
Race organizers say the two Kenyans have committed to the 116th edition of the event on April 16.
Mutai ran the fastest marathon in history last year, 2 hours, 3 minutes, 2 seconds. That was 57 seconds faster than Haile Gebrselassie’s world record. But Mutai’s mark is not recognized as the new mark because the net downhill Boston Marathon course is not eligible for world records.
Kilel beat American Desiree Davila two seconds. It’s the fourth straight year the women’s race has been decided by four seconds or less.
