TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — The city of Tuscaloosa is moving forward to demolish an apartment complex where a handful of people are living amid the rubble of the killer tornado that plowed through town in the spring.

Only one of 20 or so buildings remain at Graceland Apartments, which sustained major damage in the twister. A pair of families moved in to the remaining building at New Year’s, and they’re waiting to see what happens next.

Geraldine Horton says her apartment is nice, and her family has everything it needs. She says the virtually abandoned complex has a sense of sadness, but life there is OK.

City spokeswoman Meredith Lynch says residents will be allowed to remain temporarily, but it’s not clear what will happen as demolition work progresses. The complex is supposed to be demolished by the first anniversary of the April tornado.
