Letter: Resolve this year to volunteer

Did you make a list of New Year’s resolutions this year? While common resolutions include losing weight or saving money, I propose something different: volunteer.

Volunteering focuses our energy on something greater than ourselves. By helping others, you’ll join the millions of other volunteers who have already discovered how wonderful this feels. Donating money is also important, but volunteering your time is priceless.

Don’t know where to start? Just look at your hobbies or things you enjoy. There are organizations focused on schools, animals, politics and children.

Last year, I participated at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, as I had lost my aunt to cancer. My commitment is to find a cure for cancer before more people suffer the same fate as my aunt. That single event inspired me to contribute more time as part of the event committee and connect with many others with the same goal.

Are you too “busy” to volunteer? How many hours can you idly watch television or play video games? It feels vastly better to volunteer, and I promise you’ll feel better, too.

Add volunteering to your New Year’s resolution list for 2012 … and I’ll see you at this year’s relay.
