BREST, France (AP) — French skipper Loick Peyron is close to beating the round-the-world sailing record in the Jules Verne Trophy.

Peyron and his Banque Populaire V crew were about three days ahead of the current record by Friday afternoon as they headed toward the French port of Brest.

French skipper Franck Cammas holds the current record, which he set two years ago at 48 days, 7 hours, 44 minutes and 52 seconds aboard his multihull vessel Groupama 3.

The Jules Verne Trophy is a prize for the fastest circumnavigation of the world by any type of yacht with no restrictions on the size of the crew.
