BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Konrad Niedzwiedzki of Poland won the 500 meters at the European speed skating championships Saturday, edging out teammate Zbigniew Brodka by 0.01 second.

Niedzwiedzki finished in 36.89 seconds to retain his title from the race he won last year in Renon, Italy. Jan Blokhuijsen of the Netherlands was third.

In the only women’s race of the day, Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the 1,500 in 2 minutes, 3.64 seconds, ahead of Linda de Vries of the Netherlands and Yuliya Skokova of Russia.

Sablikova, the world-record holder in the 5,000 and 10,000, is the defending European champion and leads the overall standings. The title will be decided Sunday in the 5,000.
