PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — One of two Northwest middle school students who collapsed at separate basketball practices has improved to good condition. The second student remains in critical condition.

The parents of 12-year-old Isaac Arzate of Salem released a statement Monday through OHSU Doernbecher Hospital, thanking all those who have offered prayers and support. They especially thanked the boy’s youth basketball coaches, who called for help and began CPR Friday evening. The parents say that swift action “probably saved Isaac’s life.” A hospital spokeswoman said the boy was in good condition Monday after being listed as critical through Sunday.

A 14-year-old La Center, Wash., boy remained in critical condition Monday at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland. Cody Sherrell collapsed Jan. 3 at a basketball practice at his middle school. Coaches there also performed CPR.
