LONDON (AP) — Twenty years after helping his injured son cross the finish line in Barcelona, Jim Redmond has been selected to carry the Olympic flame during the torch relay ahead of the London Games.
The British Olympic Association selected Redmond as a torchbearer for the nationwide relay that starts on May 19 and ends at the opening ceremony on July 27.
In one of the most emotional moments of the Barcelona Games, British runner Derek Redmond tore a hamstring in a semifinal of the 400 meters, prompting his father to run onto the track and virtually carry his crying son the rest of the way.
BOA chairman Colin Moynihan says the committee is honoring Jim Redmond “for the moving way that he supported his son to cross the finish line.”
