SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Shane Doan looked half exhausted and half stunned as the puck hit the back of the net.

After more than 1,100 games and 300 goals, the Phoenix Coyotes captain finally had his first NHL hat trick.

Doan and Scott Mellanby had been the only players in NHL history to score 300 goals and not get three in one game.

Doan left Mellanby alone in that category Saturday night, when he scored his third goal against the New York Islanders with less than a second left.

The 35-year-old veteran got it at the end of a long shift and had to wait for a video review to see if the goal counted. Once it was, Doan broke into a huge smile and was mobbed by teammates as the crowd chanted “Doan!”
