PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A rowdy courtroom sentencing turned briefly violent when a man in the gallery leaped from his seat and punched the defendant in the face.

The scrum broke out Monday morning, as Thomas Kolpin was being walked to the front of the court room.

Kolpin was being sentenced on manslaughter charges. He fatally stabbed a man when he found the man with his ex-girlfriend, the Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/z0TxjF ).

On Monday, about half a dozen men wearing white T-shirts imprinted with the victim’s photo and “R.I.P.” were in the courtroom for the sentencing, along with about 20 other people.

Randy Sturdevant was wearing one of the T-shirts. When Kolpin, escorted by deputies, turned a corner in the courtroom, Sturdevant sprang and struck him in the face.

Sturdevant was charged with assault.
