LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A 10-year-old unraced mare named Topliner sold for $1.4 million on the opening day of Keeneland’s January Horses of All Ages Sale on Monday.

Northern Farm’s Katsumi Yoshida purchased Topliner, dam of 2011 Grade 1 Matriarch stakes winner Star Billing. She was offered in foal to sire Medaglia d’Oro. Topliner, consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, is the daughter of Thunder Gulch and half-sister to multiple Grade 1 stakes winners Stellar Jayne and Starrer.

Topliner is expected to be sent to Yoshida’s operation in Japan.

Keeneland sold 209 horses on Monday for $13,932,200, a 30.3 percent increase over the opening day of last year’s sale. Average prices rose 16.6 percent to $66,661 and the median increased 60 percent to $32,000.
