ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — Tillamook County General Hospital will keep a nursing education program afloat that the hospital says provides a needed resource to the community.

The extension program for Clatsop Community College’s nursing program was scheduled to be axed this year after donations to local hospitals were limited to those operating in Clatsop County, the Daily Astorian reports (http://bit.ly/xNR0gx ).

Four students are selected each year and take their practicum at Tillamook General.

Hospital CEO Larry Davy says the county must keep work to train locals in nursing in order to keep them in the area.

The hospital promised to cover the unmet costs for students in the program right now and the four students starting the two-year cycle next fall. After that, it will seek a funding partnership.
