LONDON (AP) — Former Essex cricketer Mervyn Westfield has pleaded guilty to spot-fixing.

Westfield entered the plea Thursday at the start of his trial at the Old Bailey in London. He had been charged with conspiracy to defraud following claims he deliberately bowled poorly in an English county match.

Westfield was accused of acting dishonestly during a match between Essex and Durham in September 2009. He is alleged to have agreed to ensure a certain number of runs were scored off the first over of his bowling.

The offense carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
