Officials announce countywide burn ban

The Southwest Clean Air Agency issued a Clark County-wide burn ban on Wednesday. The ban will likely continue until Saturday, officials said.

The agency enacted a stage 1 ban, which prohibits the use of uncertified wood stoves and inserts — generally older than 1990 — and all fireplaces. Outdoor burning is also prohibited.

For homes that use wood burning as their only source of heat, however, the burn ban does not apply.

The announcement was prompted by stagnant air patterns that allow fine-particle pollution levels to rise to potentially unhealthy levels, according to the clean air agency. Similar conditions led officials to prohibit burning for much of last month.
