Canisius beats Marist 67-57 for first MAAC win

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Gaby Belardo and Alshwan Hymes scored 18 points apiece as Canisius defeated Marist 67-57 Friday night for the Golden Griffins’ first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory in six tries this season.

Canisius (4-12, 1-5) hit 11 of 29 from beyond the arc, compared to 5 of 19 for the Red Foxes.

Marist had an early 11-6 lead, then the Golden Griffins took over with a 19-2 run.

Canisius led 35-23 at the break and then maintained a double-digit lead for all but 17 seconds, after the Red Foxes closed to 65-57 with 30 seconds left.

The Golden Griffins, who came in ranked 42nd in the nation in free-throw shooting percentage (73.5), had only two attempts from the charity stripe, with Harold Washington making both with 13 seconds remaining.

Anell Alexis, Isaiah Morton and Chavaughn Lewis scored 11 apiece for Marist (7-10, 2-5), which has lost three games in a row.
