CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Daniela Merighetti earned the first World Cup victory of her career Saturday, edging overall World Cup leader Lindsey Vonn.

Merighetti won one of the season’s biggest downhills before her home fans as wind slowed the favorites. She was skiing with a broken left thumb but clocked 1 minute, 33.17 seconds down the Olympia delle Tofane course.

Vonn of the United States finished second, 0.21 seconds behind. Defending overall champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany was third, 0.40 back.

The 30-year-old Merighetti had only one previous podium finish, placing second in a giant slalom in Are, Sweden, nine years ago. She’s also had three fourth-place finishes.

A super-G is scheduled for Sunday.
