Talking Points: Quit your stormin’

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

C’mon St. Mary’s students. You’re better than that. Fans at the Moraga, Calif., school stormed the court Thursday after a win over No. 21 Gonzaga.

Let’s see … the Gaels are now 16-2. They beat the Zags last year, and the year before that. They reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament two years ago.

We realize that it has become almost obligatory for students to rush the court if their team wins an ESPN game. But it also has become cliché. Word of advice: Act like you’ve been there before.

For somebody who has spent the past 20 years being roundly criticized, Bud Selig must be doing something right. Baseball owners have voted 29-1 to extend his contract through 2014.

Selig’s missteps have been well-documented (Steroids? What steroids?). But he also has had plenty of triumphs, including expanding the playoffs and instituting interleague play. Most important, baseball has the most stable labor situation of any major sports league in this country. Owners were wise to extend his reign.
